Corporate World
After finishing his undergraduate studies he started working for large international corporations in Manufacturing and Banking.
His first assignment was as a Product Engineer in the R&D dpt at an automotive tier two corporation with HQ in the USA. The plant in South America provided OEM parts for large assembly automakers, such as: Chrysler/Jeep, Ford, GM, TOYOTA, Mitsubishi and Honda. Design, testing and customer service was part of his accountabilities. During those initial years, Alfredo Matos transitioned to the Process Improvement area on a six month international assignment when was transferred temporarily to the main factory located in Tennessee, USA; here he got proactively involved, from the beginning, with the Lean Manufacturing transformation program this corporation started to go through. He received formal training as a facilitator for Lean Manufacturing methodologies, the training was delivered by the Motorola University. There, in Tennessee, he delivered several Lean Manufacturing training sessions to the personnel in the factory. After finishing this international assignment, he returned to the plant in South America where he delivered training using the same Kaizen Blitz modality. The application of Lean improved throughput and reduced operational cost, it also increased overall productivity in the areas of: Maintenance/Reliability, Quality, HR, Logistics and Safety & Health.
His next challenge continued in the Automotive sector when decided to transition from the suspension sector to the tire industry. This new experience shaped his professional career in an unique way. The Lean Manufacturing methodology was more mature at this time in this company which is a worldwide leader in the tire industry with headquarters in Milano, Italy. Alfredo had the opportunity to lead the implementation of the whole Lean Manufacturing program framed in the TPM / WCM methodology in the factory in Venezuela after spending more than half a year and attending to more than 1200 training hours at a factory in Brazil. This training followed the hands-on Kaizen Blitz methodology for solving real problems at a company with a revenue of $7 billion a year. He also was accountable as an Operations manager for several production areas including: raw materials, semi-products, assembly and vulcanization. The entire factory at that time had a workforce of 450 people and was running continuously on 24x7 shifts during the week.
The financial sector was also improved when Alfredo applied transferable Lean Enterprise concepts. He led 25% of an operations and commercial department on a bank from Spain with large worldwide presence, he was accountable for improving the operation by making it leaner. After a period of 18 months the area delivered its same throughput after reducing 75% of its resources.
The first Canadian Bank was also beneficiated with Alfredo’s influence. An important regulated area, as it is Anti Money Laundry in Capital Markets, saw huge improvements after a reporting process containing important KPI’s and KRI’s for decision making was streamlined, throughput was increased by 300% and delivery time reduced by 75%. This improvement mitigated the risk of fines to a minimum after commercial relations with other financial institutions were stopped due to non compliance with mandates from the regulatory bodies in Canada and the United States.
Alfredo’s professional career continued to soar back in the manufacturing sector leveraging all his vast knowledge and passion for process improvement and did set the foundation in the areas of logistics and quality control in a Plastic Injection Molding company with two locations in Canada with initial savings of C$ 500K in a month. Inventory balancing and the identification of the main quality issues were key for these successful actions.
Entrepreneurship
He was also an entrepreneur when ran his own Packaging Manufacturing Factory for over six years. Alfredo relied on his experience, knowledge and desire to put together all the Lean Manufacturing techniques in order to create a state of the art manufacturing business.
He also worked as Lean Transformation Director and Consultant at Centecorp, an engineering consulting firm located in Central Florida, USA; he positively influenced four organizations soon after the 2008 financial crisis: two manufacturing companies, one refrigerated freight transportation company and the Engineering Dpt of the University of Central Florida, which is one of the top three largest Universities in the USA.
Other involvement
He provided quality feedback to undergraduate students when working for UCF as a Teacher Assistant.
As part of the community, he has been member of homeowner associations looking after their correct and leaner operation for households budget protection.
Following his passion for aviation, he was an advocate participant of the board of directors in an Aviation Private Club located in an airport with about 130 privately operated hangars and adjacent to an International Airport. His involvement included advising on Lean Operations for the airport.
